Butterfly Release Company® has been a family-owned farm in Central Florida since 2002. We are breeders, not brokers. That difference matters.

Every Painted Lady butterfly we ship is raised here under our own care. They eat an organic diet. They are kept in clean, healthy conditions. Why Painted Lady Butterflies?

Painted Lady butterflies (Vanessa cardui) are one of the most widespread butterfly species on Earth. They occur naturally throughout the continental United States. They are not endangered. They are not tied to a single rare host plant. Their caterpillars feed on a wide variety of common plants, and the adults are excellent pollinators.

Because they are already native across the country, releasing farm-raised Painted Ladies does not introduce a foreign species. They can find nectar, mates, and habitat wherever they are released. In many areas, habitat loss from development has reduced local butterfly numbers. A well-timed, healthy release can add to those populations rather than compete with them.

We only ship butterflies that are indigenous to the destination region. That is a core part of how we operate.

Humane Care from Start to Finish

Ethics include how the butterflies are treated every day, not just on the day they fly.

They are raised with space, proper food, and careful handling. For shipping, we use a proven method that places them into a natural dormant state with cold packs — similar to how they rest at night in the wild. Our origami-style release envelopes are designed so the butterfly rests with its wings folded in a comfortable position, protecting legs and antennae.

We include extra butterflies with every order. We ship overnight via UPS so they arrive the day before the event. We give clear instructions so families know how to keep them cool and comfortable until release time, and we recommend releasing only when temperatures are warm enough for them to fly well (generally above 65–70°F).

The goal is simple: healthy butterflies that are ready to fly, not stressed or injured ones.
